Take control of your energy bills

It is important that you know what you’re paying for when you sign up to a new energy contract, especially since the UK business energy market is unregulated which can leave you exposed to all kinds of clauses and terms.

Do you know what you’ve signed up for?

On the 26th of June, BBC WatchDog reported the activities of one of the largest UK energy brokers, Bionic. They run a Digital Renewal Service, that if agreed upon in their initial sign-up, will auto-renew the business customer into a new energy contract up to 12 months before the contract ends. The broker states they offer communication of the quotes 3 days before the contract is completed, allowing the customer to opt-out.

However, WatchDog presented evidence that customers claim no communication took place and customers were unaware of entering a new contract, one business states they are paying £282 more per month on a 3-year agreement that Bionic set up without their knowledge that they are now tied to.

What should I do if I have no control over my renewal?

If you have used Bionic in the last few years, the company runs a ‘Make it Easy Guarantee’ which allows complaints to be compensated with the full commission earned by Bionic on the energy set-up. This might not cover the cost increases of the new contract, but it will mean that Bionic will not make any money from the Digital Renewal Service.
