Should you renew or switch business gas suppliers?

The decision of whether to renew or switch business gas suppliers isn’t one you should take lightly. The cheapest business gas rates aren’t always the best choice for your business – especially if you’ve got industry specific requirements.

You should start by finding out when your contract is up for renewal. We’d recommend making a comparison when your switching window opens (usually between one and six months before your deal ends). You’ll receive your renewal quote around three months before the end of your current deal.

What if you’re happy with your current supplier? Great, we can still help. As a commercial gas broker, we can negotiate with your current supplier to secure you a better deal that best fits the needs of your company.

How do I compare business gas rates

Here, at Utility Bidder, we’ve made it really easy to compare business gas prices based on the latest wholesale market rates. Before you start, you’ll just need a few important bits of information:

    • your businesses premise’s postcode
    • your annual gas usage (you can find this on your bill)
    • the name of your current commercial gas supplier

With them, you’re good to go. Push the ‘compare prices now’ button. We’ll instantly compare prices from more than 20 trusted UK suppliers to bring you a business gas quote bespoke to the requirements of your company.

What types of business gas tariffs are there?

Your rate is fixed for the duration of your contract. You’ll pay more or less depending on how much you use, but the unit rate won’t change – protecting you against wholesale price fluctuations.

Your per-unit rate will depend on wholesale market prices. If prices rise, you’ll face paying more, but when they fall, you could make a significant saving.

You’ll typically be placed on an extended deal if your contract has come to an end, and you haven’t decided to switch or renew.

You’ll purchase all the gas your business needs upfront – this can be beneficial as it gives you access to wholesale market prices. However, due to the upfront costs involved, it’s typically only an option for larger organisations.

Your bill will be split into fixed unit costs and other variable charges. The fixed element will stay the same for the duration of your contract. The variable element will cover other costs associated with your supply, such as National Grid and Transmission Network usage costs.

When you fall out of contract, you’ll most likely find yourself on this tariff – it’s often the most expensive one, so should be avoided if possible.

How is my business gas bill calculated?

There are two primary factors to bear in mind when making a business gas comparison:

Unit Price – You’ll pay a rate for each unit (kWh) of gas your business uses. How much you pay will depend on whether you’re on a fixed or variable contract. If your contract is fixed, you’ll pay the same price for every unit for the duration of your contract. If it’s variable, the price could fluctuate depending on wholesale prices.

Standing Charge – You’ll pay your supplier a daily standing charge to cover the cost of managing and delivering your gas supply.

Your business size and sector can also have an impact on your business gas quote.

    Mark Gamble

    What our expert says...

“The UK, and the rest of Europe, are more than on course to meet their 90% full gas storage quota before 1st November. This is providing for some positive sentiment across the markets and aside from a few ups and downs, has seen a relatively flat trading period, potentially providing an ideal time for next contract discussions.

The UK saw a very mild winter last year, but the build-up to it (due to the unknown of being the first winter without Russian gas reserves) caused panic and concern that drove energy prices across Europe to unprecedented highs.

We hope to never see such highs again…. but there remains the uncertainty of what this winter will bring… and along with that, what negative connotations this will bring to gas and power prices”

What are the current business gas prices per kWh?

With the volatile nature of the wholesale market over the past 18 months, it’s difficult to provide an exact figure. How much you can expect to pay will also depend on your supplier, contract type and whether you’re eligible to pay the Climate Change Levy (CCL).

We’ve put together the table below to give you a better idea, based on the average annual gas consumption of similar-sized organisations.

Average gas kWh Prices by business size

Business size Annual usage Unit price (per kWh) Daily standing charge (pence) Annual cost
Micro business 5,000 to 15,000 kWH 9.8p 53.1p £1,119 (based on annual usage of 10,000kWh)
Small business 15,000 to 30,000 kWh 9.1p 65.7p £2,286 (based on annual usage of 22,500kWh)
Medium business 30,000 to 65,000 kWh 8.7p 111.8p £4,540 (based on annual usage of 47,500kWh)
Large business More than 65,000 kWh 8.5p 111.8p £5,993 (based on annual usage of 65,000kWh)

Disclaimer: Due to volatility within the energy market, prices can change on an hourly basis meaning that the prices you’re quoted are different from the averages shown. Prices may also vary according to your meter type and business location. Updated June 2023.

      Frequently asked questions

Most gas suppliers give you a window of between 6-12 months to secure a new contract. Securing a contract with a new supplier in due time, before your contract end date, will help prevent you from paying out of contract rates, also improving the ease of transition between one supplier to another.

Securing a long-term, fixed rate tariff gas contract early could also help protect you from the elements, although it can’t be avoided forever, unfortunately.

We recommend securing a new business gas deal early to avoid disappointment. Switching supplier can provide good savings for your business.

Finding the best business gas quote can be difficult. There are many new suppliers emerging in the market, plus the big six and other established suppliers, making it even harder to evaluate your options.

As no two businesses are the same, all cases should be treated differently. If you attain prices from a business gas comparison website or from a price book, then we’re confident that it’s not the best deal for your company. Find out what affects average business gas prices uk 2022. Average commercial gas prices per kwh can fluctuate – so you could potentially make savings by switching.

So, what is the best way to proceed? If you have the time and negotiating skills, then calling all the suppliers would be the best approach. However, we understand that running a business is time consuming. This is where Utility Bidder comes in! Allow us to negotiate the best gas deal for your business, so you don’t have to.

There are two types of gas meters – digital and dial:

Digital – When reading the meter, go from left to right, ignoring red figures. Also, ignore any zeros and digits after the decimal point.

Dial – Again, when reading a digital meter, go from left to right. If the point is between numbers, then take the lower figure. If this is between 0-9, then take the number nine for the reading.

      Ignore red readings.

You can reduce your usage but, if you’re already paying high rates, your efforts will be counteractive. The alternative is to compare commercial gas prices per kwh, which will require a lot of research.

Alternatively, you can ask Utility Bidder to get immediate pricing from UK gas suppliers, giving you competitive pricing when you look to switch.

Business gas prices are influenced by usage. If your company consumes large amounts of energy, then you can generate efficiencies in the rates that you receive. Business customers usually pay a higher rate of VAT which is around 20%.

Brokers and consultants take away the stress of having to compare quotes yourself, as well as securing contracts and resolving any issues away from your business. It gives you peace of mind when searching for gas deals that the paperwork and supplier communication will be predominantly completed for you.

You should be able to find your contract end date on the first page of your statement. However, some suppliers do not always publish this information. If you are having difficulty finding this, contact our gas experts who will be happy to help you gather this information.

If you’re moving premises, your gas contract could potentially be terminated. If Utility Bidder is managing your account, we can advise your business on the correct procedure.

Unlike other contracts that you may be tied into – such as mobile phone contracts – your business utility contract may be terminated if your business ceases trading.
