The Club plays on council-owned land but has facilities which include a club shop and a clubhouse and bar which is frequented by members and their families. Currently, the Club is raising significant funds to build a much-needed new contemporary clubhouse and facilities.

Running a sports club is expensive

Dave Grimley is Treasurer and he, along with other Committee members, is a volunteer. “We are really passionate about the work we do here,” he said. “We are proud of the fact that HHRFC has over 450 children playing at the Club each weekend – the highest number of any club in Sussex and it’s a vital part of our local community.”

However, running a successful rugby club is expensive – it costs just under £300Kpa simply to keep it running. Dave adds: “We rely on membership fees, social events and shop sales and as Treasurer it’s my job to ensure that we account for every penny to ensure it is well spent.”

Dave understands the importance of changing utility providers on an annual basis rather than simply renewing the contract with the same provider. “Energy providers rely on businesses to go for the easy option and simply roll over their contract when it comes to an end,” he said. “However, this can be really expensive and so I always make sure we search the market every year to find the best price.”

Dave admits this is a time-consuming job – it takes up a lot of his time, which as a volunteer could be spent doing more important jobs for the Club. “Even when I have used an online search engine, I find it really frustrating that at the end of it all, I still have to contact providers to get the full details.”
