Where are the best countries to enjoy working, and which company's employees are the happiest?

According to the latest statistics, there are currently just under 31 million people employed in the UK in a multitude of industries and different job roles, for many private companies and public constitutions. Of those, thousands work in the private sector for some of the biggest companies, not only in the country but in the world, in many different fields of work.

By looking at the reviews from workers of some of the largest private employers in the country we have been able to establish which companies have the happiest workers in the country. An average score of the reviews from Glassdoor and Indeed was used to bestow an average score out of five for each company studied.

Discovering how the happiness of workers in the United Kingdom compared to the rest of Europe was also important to discover, therefore numerous happiness and employment factors have been collated from around Europe to discover which countries have the happiest workers.

Happy worker score

Finland is the country with the happiest workers as they achieved an overall score of 7.93. This is 0.15 more than the second placed nation, and 2.61 higher than the average score of all the countries. The Finns achieved this by having the highest world happiness score, and the joint most national holidays as well as scoring highly in all the other categories.

The small volcanic island of Iceland was the European nation with the second happiest workers, as they achieved an overall score of 7.78. Iceland also has 16 public holidays (the joint highest), they also have high average monthly wages at €3,221.

Norway scores very highly across all four factors to help them rank as the country with the third happiest workers, as they achieved an overall score of 7.75/10. Norwegian workers can enjoy the third shortest average working week (33.7), as well as the fourth highest average monthly wages (€3,313).

Yet another Scandinavian nation with extremely happy workers is Sweden who achieved an overall score of 7.49. Swedish workers can enjoy 15 public days off for holiday throughout the year, and on top of this enjoy average monthly wages more than a grand higher than the average across europe.

Denmark completes the quinary of Nordic crossed countries that have locked out the top five ranking positions for the happiest workers in Europe. On average the Danes only work 33.4 hours per week, and earn €3,562 per month on average which equates to over €25 per hour on average.

List of companies was chosen from those with the highest number of reviews on Glassdoor

and Indeed. Additionally, some of the larger companies from Great Place to Work’s UK's Best Workplaces 2021 list were included.

Both of these review websites give each company a score out of five, we averaged these scores to create an overall score for each company.


Working hours data for EU countries was sourced from:

The happiness score was sourced from the 2020 world happiness report.

Public holidays for each country were sourced individually.

All factors were then run through a weighted index calculation to discover the overall score for each country.
