How To Switch Business Energy Supplier

Are you looking for a way to bring down the cost of your business energy bills? Utility Bidder can help you compare gas and electricity rates from some of the UK’s biggest suppliers. However, before you think about switching, it’s good to understand the entire switching process.

When can you switch business energy supplier?

Business energy contracts work differently from domestic energy deals. Normally you can only switch your business energy tariff if:

you’re on a energy contract you didn’t choose – this usually happens when you take on new premises, or your fixed-term contract has ended, and you’ve not agreed on a renewal.
your contract has ended, and you’re not bound by terms. Some contracts require you to give notice to your current energy provider.

If you’re in a fixed-term contract, you can usually start to look for a new business energy provider six months before your contract is due to end.

Do the same switching rules apply to microbusinesses?

No, they don’t. Microbusinesses have greater freedom and flexibility when it comes to being able to switch business gas and electricity suppliers.

If you run one of the UK’s 5.3 million microbusinesses, you can arrange a new energy deal while you still have more than 30 days remaining on your existing fixed-term contract.

Rollover contracts cannot exceed 12 months and microbusinesses can terminate them at any time – without being required to serve notice or face a termination fee.

Unsure of when your contract is due to expire? Don’t worry – your supplier is required to inform you around 60 days before the expiry date with information around about annual consumption and how your current deal compares with any new deals they offer.

How do you know if your business is a microbusiness?

Microbusinesses are those that:

• use less than 100,000 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity a year
OR
• use less than 293,000 kWh of gas
OR
• have less than 10 employees, a yearly turnover of £632,000 or less, and a yearly balance sheet of £316,000 or less (at least two of these conditions must be met).

What should you consider before you switch business energy provider?

• Cost: if energy prices are high, you may decide to opt for a fixed rate – which provides safety for your business. Alternatively, you may decide a variable rate contract offers opportunities to save money when wholesale market prices fall.

• Industry: a retail business based in a single shop unit won’t consume as much gas or electricity as a manufacturing plant. This will have a significant impact on your quote. And if your organisation is particularly energy-intensive, you’ll require a half-hourly meter .

• Meters: if you’ve moved into new premises that don’t have a gas or electricity supply, you’ll need to pay for an energy meter to be installed.

• No cooling-off period: domestic energy contracts give you a cooling-off period – just in case you change your mind. Business energy contracts do not.
