The fintech (financial technology) boom is taking the world by storm, from digital payment wallets to investment platforms and even online banking apps to help manage business energy.

In fact, Tipalti estimates that 64% of the world’s consumers have used one or more fintech platforms.

Fintech refers to the integration of technology and financial services. It is the use of technology to deliver financial products and services to consumers, and it is transforming the financial industry.

But which are the biggest and best fintechs in 2022 and where do the likes of Chime, OpenSea and Stripe rank when it comes to factors such as valuation, funding, social following, and online visibility? Here at Utility Bidder, we ranked every business in Forbes’ Fintech 50 to find out which are really the most influential.

The Biggest Fintechs of 2021

Last year we conducted a similar study, to find 2021’s most influential fintech businesses. The findings showed that the most influential fintech was Robinhood, beating out all the other fintechs in terms of funding and Google searches.

Stripe, Kraken, Klarna and Wise rounded out the top five most influential fintechs of last year. This year, Robinhood, along with Kraken, Klarna and Wise, did not appear on Forbes’ Fintech 50.

Stripe ranked in second place last year, falling to third place in this year’s ranking. In 2022, we see Chime ranking as the most influential fintech, up 6 places from its position in our ranking last year.

The Most Influential Fintechs of 2022

1. Chime

Chime is the clear winner, and the most influential fintech of 2022, scoring in the top five for all of the factors we looked at. Chime has one of the highest valuations of all the fintech businesses on Forbes’ Fintech 50, at $25 billion, beaten only by FTX. The fintech is helping bring basic banking services to its customers and comes second for the total amount of funding raised, which has most recently been reported to be $2.3 billion.

Chime comes in fourth place for social followers and for Google searches, showing its popularity among consumers worldwide.

2. OpenSea

Overall Fintech score

OpenSea, the world’s largest NFT marketplace, comes in second place on our list of the most influential fintechs this year. One of the most popular fintechs among consumers, OpenSea received 2,889,600 Google searches in the last 12 months, beaten only by Carta, and also has the most Twitter followers at 1.8 million.

OpenSea ranks third on our list when it comes to value, with its latest valuation estimated at $13.3 billion.

3. Stripe

Online shopping has boomed in recent years, thanks to its ease and convenience. It’s no surprise to see payment processing software Stripe, in third place. Stripe offers e-commerce solutions for online businesses, such as Amazon and AliExpress.

Stripe ranks third on our list for the most Twitter followers, with 211,800 followers. Stripe has raised the most funding out of all the fintechs on our list, with $2.4 billion raised to date.

We analysed the 50 fintech companies on Forbes’ 2022 Fintech on the following four factors, giving each company a normalised score out of ten for each factor, before taking an average final score across all four factors.

Total funding raised according to Forbes.

Latest known valuation according to Forbes.

Number of Twitter followers as of August 10th, 2022.

Number of annual global searches between July 2021 and June 2022 according to Google Ads Keyword Planner.
