Renewable Energy Index

Not only are fossil fuels running out at an alarming rate, but they are also causing harm to the planet. This is putting a huge amount of emphasis on renewable energy sources to help create a sustainable future.

Whether it’s you business energy supply -or your car, swapping fossil fuels out with a renewable energy source can make a key difference in making your city greener.

With this growing importance of renewable energy, we looked at government data to find out which local authorities are producing the most renewable energy, and which local authorities had the most sites to help produce renewable energy. We will also compare data from 2020 and 2021 to see which local authorities had the highest growth in renewable energy production.

Selby is named the greenest area, producing more than 3.2 million MWh of renewable energy per 10,000 households

We’ve revealed the UK’s greenest areas by finding out the amount of renewable energy produced in each local authority.

1.

Selby

Yorkshire and The Humber

Selby is the greenest area in the UK, producing more than 3.2 million MWh of renewable electricity per 10,000 households in 2021. Incredibly, Selby also generated the most MWh out of all areas in the UK, with a total of 11.4 million. The majority of Selby’s total came from plant biomass, which produced 11.3 million of the 11.4 million that Selby produced.

2.

Highland

Scotland

Scotland’s Highland takes second place with just under 600,000 MWh of renewable energy generated per 10,000 households in 2021. Highland produced a total of 7.2 million MWh, with four million MWh of energy from onshore wind, and almost three million MWh from hydropower.

3.

Lancaster

North West

Completing our top three is Lancaster with 525,000 MWh of renewable energy produced per 10,000 households. In 2021, Lancaster produced over 3.1 million MWh of renewable energy. The majority of Lancaster’s renewable energy came from offshore wind, where just over three million MWh was generated.

Highland had 40, refused applications for renewable energy sites, more than anywhere else

You can’t fault an area for trying to implement sources of renewable energy. We wanted to find out which UK counties had the highest number of refused applications.

1.

Highland

Scotland

Highland takes the top spot with 40 refused applications for renewable energy sites. Despite having the highest number of refused applications, Highland still has over 7,000 operational sites, which produced over 7.2 million MWh of renewable energy in 2021.

Refused applications:

40
2.

Strathclyde

Scotland

In second place is Strathclyde with 29 refused applications in total. Strathclyde is located on the west coast of Scotland and is home to one of the best universities in Scotland. Strathclyde is now made up of 12 local authorities, including Glasgow City Council, and North and South Lanarkshire.

Refused applications:

29
3.

Grampian

Scotland

Moving over to the east coast of Scotland we have the Scottish region of Grampian completing our top three with 26 refused applications. Grampian is located on the east coast of the Highlands area and is a popular place for hiking. Grampian is made up of Aberdeenshire, the City of Aberdeen, and Moray.

Fife is named the renewable energy capital of the UK, with over 1,500 sites per 10,000 households

We’ve looked at the local authorities with the highest number of operational sites as of 2021.

1.

Fife

Scotland

File takes the top spot with over 1,500 operational sites per 10,00 households. Fife has over 7,000 operational sites which produced 719,000 MWh of renewable energy. Not only is Fife an environmentally friendly city, but it’s also known as the home of golf, famed for St. Andrews which is where the sport is believed to be created.

Operational sites per 10,000 households:

1,541
2.

Stirling

Scotland

In second place is Stirling with 1,363 operational sites per 10,000 households. In total, Sitrling has just under 6,000 operational sites, which have generated 675,000 MWh of renewable energy in 2021.

3.

Mid Devon

South West

Mid Devon completes our top three 1,361 operational sites per 10,000 households, just 16 fewer than second place. Mid Devon has just over 4,500 operational sites in total. These sites have generated almost 260,000 MWh of renewable energy.

Inverclyde’s renewable energy production rose by 300% in one year, the highest growth in the UK

In 2021, the UK produced 3.7% more renewable energy than it did the year before. That’s why we wanted to find which local authorities were most responsible for this growth. We’ve looked at renewable energy production in 2020 and 2021 to find out which local authorities had the highest percentage increase.

1.

Inverclyde

Scotland

In first place is Inverclyde with an increase of almost 300% in renewable energy generation. In 2020, the Scottish local authority produced under 14,000 MWh, which rose to nearly 55,000 in 2021. Inverclyde’s sources of renewable energy are split between photovoltaics and onshore wind. Inverclyde’s huge growth in renewable energy was down to an increase in onshore wind, which rose from 11,000 MWh to almost 53,000 MWh.

Increase in renewable energy generation:

2.

Sandwell

West Midlands

With a 68% increase in renewable energy generation, Sandwell takes second place. In 2020, Sandwell’s source of renewable energy came from photovoltaic. However, in 2021 Sandwell started generating energy from municipal solid waste, which accounted for the 68% increase in renewable energy generation.

Increase in renewable energy generation:

68%
3.

Manchester

North West

Manchester completes our top three with an increase in renewable energy generation of 54%. Like Sandwell, it was a new source of renewable energy which caused the spike in production. In 2021, Manchester started generating renewable energy from anaerobic digestion, to add to the energy they were already producing from plant biomass and photovoltaics.

Canada’s renewable energy sites could produce 268 MWh per 100,000 people, more than any other country

Installed renewable energy capacity is the maximum amount of energy that a generating station can produce. We’ve looked at the countries with the highest combined capacity.

1.

Canada

Canada’s generating stations can produce 268 MWh of renewable energy per 100,000 people, which gives it the top spot. Canada’s total capacity is 103,000 MWh. Canada is one of the leading countries for renewable energy. In 2019, Canada’s main energy source was hydropower, which made up almost 60% of all electricity generated. Fossil fuels made up only 20% of this total.

2.

Germany

Germany takes second place with 166 MWh of installed capacity. Almost 50% of electricity generated in Germany came from renewable sources. Despite this promising total, Germany is aiming to generate 80% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Installed renewable energy capacity:

166 MWh
3.

Italy

Italy completes our top three with an installed renewable energy capacity of just under 100 MWh per 100,000 people. Over 20% of Italy’s annual energy demand came from renewable sources. Italy was also one of 14 countries to meet its 2020 target to generate at least 17% of its annual energy consumption from renewable sources.

Methodology

We used government data to find out the local authorities generating the most renewable electricity, the local authorities with the most operational sites, as well as the local authorities which had the highest percentage increase in renewable energy.

We used government data again to find out the local authorities with the highest number of refused sites.

Finally, we used Statista for the countries with the highest number of installed renewable energy capacities.
