Summer means picnic business lunches, after-work drinks in the sunshine and lower business energy bills, right? It’s a common misconception that business utilities will decrease during the warmer months since you won’t be using the heating or lighting systems as frequently. However, air conditioning, desk fans and air purifiers can all contribute to a hefty business electricity bill as employees struggle to keep themselves cool during UK heatwaves.

If you’re looking to reduce your business energy bills during the sunshine months, we’ve put together an expert guide to saving energy in the summer for businesses. Discover our top six tips on how to reduce electricity bills, but still keep employees cool and happy in the office.

    Embrace the natural daylight

One of the reasons we love summer is because it’s much lighter in the mornings and evenings. Ensure that your office embraces the lovely sunshine by opening the blinds. Lighting accounts for around 15% of the average business electricity bill, so opening the blinds in the office and switching off internal lights is a great energy saving tip for the summer.

Blinds and curtains can also be used for temperature control too. By keeping them closed, they’ll reduce the amount of heat you receive through the windows. So, we recommend keeping blinds and curtains closed in rooms that aren’t frequently used, such as meeting or collaboration rooms, to help keep the office cool.

If you’re looking to improve your green credentials, installing solar panels can help your business generate its own electricity and reduce your average business electricity bill. Solar panels could be a business aim to work towards in the long term to make your company more sustainable, but in the short term, why not switch your business utilities to green providers?

    Consider your water usage

When thinking of saving energy in the summer, we don’t necessarily think about water usage. However, if your business has a washing machine or dishwasher, then a lot of energy is being used to heat the water. Instead of washing at warm or hot temperatures, why not set it at a cooler temperature? Additionally, maximising washing loads will be more energy efficient. So, if there are a few teacups left over at the end of the office day, why not swill them out and wait for a larger load of cutlery, dishes and kitchen items to accumulate before placing them all in the dishwasher?

    Monitor the number of fans

Desk fans are a great way for employees to keep cool whilst they work. The average sized electric fan has a wattage around 25-75 which amounts to around £1 a day. Whilst this doesn’t seem a lot, ith 10 employees each using a desk fan every day over summer, this cost can soon start adding up!

To keep business gas and electricity bills manageable over the summer, we encourage evaluating the additional items in the office that contribute to additional costs. Rather than allowing individual employees to have a desk fan each, could there be a department, floor or office fan which serves the majority? Plus, seating plans could be updated, allowing those who are always cold to sit by radiators or in the middle of the room, and those who run warm to sit near windows and doors.

    Switch to LED bulbs

Learning how to save energy in the summer starts with the simplest switches. Halogen bulbs turn 90% of the energy they use into heat, which will contribute to a hot and sticky office. However, LED bulbs produce half as much heat as they operate at a lower wattage and use 75% less energy and last between 25-50% longer.

    Unplug it!

Another simple task, but one that’s easily forgotten. Saving energy in the summer can be as easy as unplugging electronics that aren’t being used, especially when the office is closed. This could include computer screens, on-the-wall monitors, toasters, kettles and coffee machines. Unplugging them will also help to keep the office cool as, when they’re all switched on and working, they will produce heat and, although they’re small, this production of heat will contribute to the overall office temperature.

    Frequently asked questions

The energy regulator, Ofgem, will implement a SoLR or “supplier of last resort” if your supplier ceased business.

No, if your supplier ceased business, your supply will not be cut off. This is because you will be given a SoLR or “supplier of last resort” to ensure you have a continuous supply of gas and electricity. Other suppliers will bid to replace the contracts of businesses that have ceased trading and Ofgem will try to get the best possible deal for the customer in these circumstances.

Ofgem will be working on finding your new supplier as quickly as possible. This will be announced on their website within a few days.

Your business contract will now be void and you will immediately be put on an “out of contract” rate which may result in your bills increasing. This will only be the case until a new tariff is agreed.

In regards to domestic customers, the protection of funds paid by non-domestic customers into their accounts “cannot be guaranteed”. Find out more information here.

Depending on your new supplier, you will still need to pay the debt to your new supplier if they have agreed to take on customer debts owed to your old supplier. If this is not the case, you will need to set up a payment plan with your old supplier’s administrators that will get in touch with you.

Businesses that use a smart meter will be appointed a SoLR and will still have access to a continuous supply. Similarly, to traditional meters, Ofgem will quickly find a suitable supplier for the circumstances. If a supplier is appointed but they can’t operate your smart meter in smart mode, it will work as a traditional meter for that time.

Ofgem advises that you should not cancel your direct debit as your new supplier will get in touch to provide further information on direct debit arrangements.
