What happens when a business energy supplier goes bust?

Ofgem‘s objective is to mitigate the repercussions of energy suppliers facing financial distress. To achieve this, they and energy firms have established a safety net that guarantees uninterrupted electricity and gas supply for consumers.

When a supplier goes bust, the market regulator Ofgem takes charge of the smooth transfer of your accounts to a new supplier, ensuring that each customer’s account balance is duly honoured during this process.

Following the successful transfer, you have the freedom to assess various business energy suppliers and make informed choices to switch to a new provider, with the assurance of being on a deemed tariff.

Who will choose my new supplier?

When Ofgem arranges the transfer to the new supplier, they make the initial selection on behalf of the affected customers. However, it is important to note that this selection is not binding, and you have the flexibility to switch to a different supplier immediately after the transfer without incurring any exit fees.

So, while Ofgem facilitates the initial switch to the new supplier to ensure continuous energy supply, customers retain the freedom to explore other options and switch to a different energy supplier without any financial penalties for leaving the new supplier. This allows you to find the best energy deal that suits their needs and preferences.

Will my energy supply be cut off?

There will be no interruption or disruption to your energy supply. Ofgem will take care of the entire process of transitioning your business to your new energy supplier.

Will I be put onto a new contract type?

After the switch takes place, Ofgem will handle the transfer to your new wholesale energy supplier, placing you on a “deemed contract.” This contract has no expiry date and grants you the flexibility to promptly switch to a different contract or opt for a new business energy supplier if this is preferred.

What happens if my account is in credit?

You will receive a refund for any credit balance in your account after settling any outstanding energy consumption bills. Ofgem will inform the newly appointed supplier about your credit balance, giving you the option to have it repaid to you or leave it in your account as usual.

Will I have to pay any debt on my account to my new supplier?

This varies based on the agreement made with your previous supplier’s administrators. If your new supplier agrees to assume the debts from the old supplier, you will be required to repay the debt to your new supplier. The specifics will be determined by the arrangement between the relevant parties.
